Devil Tarot Card Needlepoint Canvas

Here is The Devil. It is the 15th card in the Major Arcana cycle and its zodiac affinity is Capricorn.

My design of this card simplifies the iconography down to just the figure of the devil himself. In many tarot decks, you also see a chained man and woman at the feet of the devil, nude and defenseless. Instead of lush greenery and flowers, all that’s left in this devil’s hellscape is thorns.

In a reading, the devil card strongly cautions against falling into the trap of ego, materialism, greed, or addiction. Sink your feet deep into the earth, remind yourself of your core values, your sense of self, and don’t be swayed by others’ narrow points of view. The card asks, “are you chained by your fears and acting out accordingly?”

To me, evil is represented by a love of money over people. It is capitalism’s tendency to consume and destroy people and planet for the sake of the constant accumulation and hoarding of wealth. It is the vast greed and corruption and selfishness that destroys the value in human life, community, relationship, or equity. The choices to exploit others for financial gain, to justify wars for profit, to use religion as a means of control. How the powerful use racism, classism, or fear of our neighbors to divide people. The Devil card, to me, represents all of the mind games we play to tell ourselves that any of that evil is normal. It reminds us to go back to our center, remember who we are at our core, and act according to our values.

Stitch this card when you’re frustrated with the evil that exists in the world, to remind yourself of your own values and love for your neighbors. Stitch this card as a reminder that no one can control you without your consent. Remember that action guided by fear is rarely wise action; so don’t let this devil frighten you. Remove his mask and know just how absurd he really is.

Each Tarot design is 2 2/3" by 3 3/4". The canvas is 7x8" for determining stretcher bar size, if needed.
