What do butterflies know of borders? What does the earth know of maps, of lines criss-crossing her skin? The breath of the wind dances with trees and flowers, across the plains, across the desert, over mountains, with no knowledge or care for a jurisdiction. 

Humankind have embraced the mythology of borders, the magical lines that reinforce "us" and "them". But the lines, mystical and magical as they are, imaginary made real in enforcement and by law, move and shift with the tides of war, of settlement, of colonialism, on a whim. The peoples who live on the land, who know her soil and animals and plants, the peoples whose bones and blood are born of that land and will return to that land, their lives have been bisected by imaginary lines. Lines that stop no wind or rain, lines that animals can neither see nor feel, lines on a paper, a magic spell.

And in our ego, in our forgetfulness of earth, of wind, of butterflies, in our insistence that we believe in a rigid reality that is actually imaginary, we have mislaid the truths of our bodies and souls, the truths of a shared humanity. 

Yo no crucé la frontera. La frontera me cruzó.

I did not cross the border. The border crossed me.
