Those of you who follow along on TikTok may remember the Charlotte the Stingray situation I splashed into (quite by accident!!!!) this May. The too long don’t read version of that story is that my partner and I wandered into a Main Street mountain attraction of an aquarium and came face to face with a stingray who had gone mega viral and featured in dozens of international news stories about being “pregnant”.

When I saw her I was immediately concerned. I took to social media to tell the story of what I’d seen and the comments were flooded with questions and concerns from others, the videos quickly went viral, and I found myself talking to marine biologists from across the country about this stingray and the situation of her deteriorating health.

Charlotte sadly passed away from a long term illness which was mistaken, and then wrongly celebrated, as a pregnancy. Her case is a cautionary tale about animal welfare, the lack of regulations for aquatic non mammal species, and the importance of supporting AZA accredited facilities.
