Every year, the first Sunday in May brings the ‘most exciting two minutes in sports’, and alongside the joy and exuberance of the run for the roses, a palpable anticipation lurks. Will this be the year a horse steps up to become the next Triple Crown winner?

A tradition of horse racing is the draping of a blanket of flowers over the winning horse. Combining a love of horse racing and needlepoint, this series uses ribbon work to create the three distinctive blankets for the Triple Crown: the Kentucky Derby is the run for the roses, the Preakness winner wears the blanket of black-eyed susans, and the Belmont winner a blanket of white carnations. Whether you are an experienced or newer stitcher, this series will guide you through the steps needed to create a special piece honoring each race and the 13 horses to date who have accomplished the incredible feat of winning the Triple Crown.

Core fibers and stitches will carry a cohesive throughline for the series, so however you chose to display or finish your pieces, there will be no doubt they are a set. The individual defining feature of each piece is brought in highlighting the beauty of each race’s tradition, with the ribbon work applied to the blankets of roses, carnations, or black-eyed susans.
