Winged Death Hand Painted Needlepoint Canvas

“Winged Death” is an icon popular on many Puritan-era headstones from New England. Early versions of this motif are simple, with a rudimentary skull and wings, representing the soul’s journey to heaven after death. Later iterations included more intricate stonework and carvings, such as the ornate border on this design.

I imagine this design stitched as a stand up for spooky season bookshelf or mantle decor.
